Aims

FSSoc Strategic Aims - The Council of the FSSoc has developed the following four over arching objectives, which are designed to ensure the we fulfil the aim, values and vision of the FSSoc.

In order to ensure that the aims of the FSSoc is met, that the vision is realised and the values are assured, a set of four strategic aims were developed as follows:

To ensure that the Society promotes and develops regulation in forensic science and practice, the Society will:

  • Continue to set high professional standards for Forensic Science and its practitioners.
  • Engage with the regulator and relevant stakeholders.
  • Pursue mandatory membership for forensic science practitioners.
  • Seek to increase its membership generally, and in particular to include all forensic practitioners in the British Isles.
  • Maintain appropriate panels of assessors.
  • Liaise with forensic science societies, regulatory bodies and professional organisations in Europe and throughout the world.
  • Have a long-term aim of becoming a Royal Society.


To ensure that the society provides opportunitites for education, training & development for forensic practitioners the FSSoc will:

  • Provide a scheme of continuing professional development for members, in partnership with other bodies.
  • Continue to assist in the development of national occupational standards for forensic scientists.
  • Encourage, and advise, on career and professional development.
  • Provide the assessment and accreditation of qualifications and training courses.
  • Create and maintain training links with universities and other key stakeholders.
  • Develop further areas in which the Society’s Diploma will be awarded.
  • Continue to hold professional conferences.
  • Provide networking opportunities.
  • Maintain a library.


To ensure that the society supports and encourages research and development in the forensic sciences, the Society will:

  • Form a Science Committee from the existing Editorial Board which will have an influential international membership. The Science Committee will:
  • Have links to similar bodies internationally.
  • Have links to the UK Forensic Science Education Group.
  • Have close liaison with Universities.
  • Consider and promulgate information as to required research.
  • Have links to The Home Office Science Committee.
  • Have a strategic role with the Forensic Science Regulator and funding bodies.
  • Will advise on relevant conferences.
  • Provide assistance in the development of forensic science in particular by encouraging casework good practice through seminars, conferences workshops and ad-hoc committee:
  • Supporting validation of techniques and methods by encouraging publication of research papers through conferences.
  • Through publications.
  • By providing a list of organisations who provide funding opportunities for research.
  • Provide advice and assistance to the Regulator and other bodies such as United Kingdom Accreditation Service.
  • Engage with relevant research bodies.

To ensure that the society strives to continuously improve its internal structure and finance the FSSoc will:

  • Regularly review its staffing and premises requirement.
  • Consider the scope for employing a Chief Officer and other roles.
  • Consider, and if necessary, adjust the length of membership of Council Members and Officers and if necessary consider the appointment of professional full/part time officers.
  • Regularly investigate means to mitigate its tax liability.
  • Seek to generate greater income to further its charitable objects.
  • Seek Government / ESF /National Lottery Grants.
  • Set and monitor standards of service delivery in relation to society functions.
  • Provide high quality customer service.
  • Seek to raise its public profile and consider appointing a patron.
  • Provide liaison with schools and colleges.
